It’s a Great Time to Be a Phoenix! Green Bay Athletics on Fire Across Multiple Sports

Posted on 9-12-2024

Yes, it truly is a great time to be a Phoenix! Green Bay Men’s Soccer is on a four-game win streak, Green Bay women’s soccer is on a two-game win streak, Green Bay cross country collected their first Horizon League Runner of the Week since 2012, and Green Bay Volleyball Head Coach Abbey Sutherland picked up her 100th win as the head coach of the program.

Cross Country Success at Phoenix Open

Last Friday, Green Bay hosted the Third Annual Phoenix Open, where Noah Jahnke secured the top spot in the men’s 8K race with a time of 24:37.7, marking his second consecutive win. His teammate, Riley Siltman, followed closely, finishing just five seconds behind. Kelsey Radobicky led the women’s side in the 6K, finishing in 26th place with a time of 23:17.5.

Jahnke’s stellar performance also earned him the Horizon League Runner of the Week title, the first for Green Bay since 2012!

Women’s Golf Shows Promise

The Green Bay Women’s Golf team competed in their first fall tournament at the A-Ga-Ming Invitational, tying for 10th place. Freshman Jordan Shipshock stood out, finishing strong with a 77 (+5) in the third round. Ellie Frisch also had an impressive final round with a 75 (+3), as the team sets its sights on future success.

Meanwhile, the men’s team saw standout performances from freshmen Brett Wieland and Mason Haupt, both finishing under par at the SIUE Dolenc Invitational.

Men’s Soccer Dominates

The Men’s Soccer team continues its winning ways, extending its streak to four games with victories over Chicago State (1-0) and Bradley (2-1). Kolton Prater emerged as a key player, scoring the game-winner against Chicago State with a perfectly placed free kick.

The Phoenix are eager to keep the momentum going as they kick off their Horizon League schedule against Detroit Mercy this weekend.

Volleyball Coach Abbey Sutherland Marks 100 Wins

Green Bay Volleyball had a mixed weekend at the Red Raider Classic in Texas, but a bright spot came with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Northern Arizona, marking Head Coach Abbey Sutherland’s 100th win.

It looked like the Green Bay volleyball team might finish their weekend in Texas with a pair of wins, but the Phoenix fell to Texas Tech three sets to one. Across the weekend the Green Bay offense was led by Cora Behnke, who averaged 12 kills a match and was named to the Red Raider Classic All-Tournament Team.

Women’s Soccer on a Winning Streak

The Green Bay Women’s Soccer team picked up its first win of 2024 with a 5-0 drubbing of Western Illinois last Thursday. Freshman Senah Hanes scored two first-half goals, the first of her career, to help propel Green Bay out to an early lead. Hanna Arvay also scored in the first half, while Rebecca Stoeckmann added on in the second frame. The fifth GB goal came by way of a Leathernecks own goal in the 79th minute to cap off the 5-0 win.

The Phoenix then posted another clean sheet Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Central Michigan. Senah Hanes scored the game’s lone goal in the 79th minute. Green Bay improved to 2-3-1 overall record with the victories this week.

What’s Next for the Phoenix?

Green Bay’s athletic programs are not slowing down anytime soon. The men’s soccer team will face Detroit Mercy this Saturday at Aldo Santaga Stadium, while the women’s soccer team hits the road for a matchup against Drake. Green Bay’s volleyball and golf teams will also be in action as they look to continue their strong starts to the season.

Green Bay fans: Be sure to support your Phoenix as they continue to make waves across the Horizon League!
